Term Limits
By Oklahoma State Rep. George Faught It has been said that "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." No more clearly is that seen than in government. All too often we hear of another politician, or elected official in trouble because of ethics violations, or questionable activities. 'Special Projects', or 'Earmarks' as some people call them, are inserted into bills in an attempt to buy a legislator's vote. I believe the lack of across-the-board term limits helps foster this mindset. Many times well intentioned individuals have entered the political realm with high ideals, only to slowly fall prey to the status quo, eventually morphing into the power hungry career politicians they swore never to become. Ultimately, it becomes more important to get elected than to do what is right, and as such, members will sell their votes for favors they can use in their next political campaign. Term limits would discourage such actions. With only a limited time to serve, legislators could focus on accomplishing goals instead of grasping for power. Term limits would also encourage more involvement in the political process, as potential candidates would be more likely to run for an open seat than against a sitting office-holder. This serves two purposes: a fresh infusion of new ideas and the cultivation of the citizen-legislator, which was modeled for us by our first President, George Washington. Term limits does not fix the problem of corrupt or unethical politicians. However, it can be a tool that the voters use to discourage those seeking political office for the wrong motivations.
